Southeastern, a high school located in Detroit Michigan, seeks to create their first lacrosse program in school history. A campaign on Indiegogo.com will attempt to raise funds necessary to sustain their future lacrosse program. Working hard to earn a US Lacrosse First Sticks Grant, the program is seeking to raise $10,000 over the next 50 days. Currently, they have successfully raised over $2,000.
Although US Lacrosse will fund a portion of the program, and guide program development over the next 2 years, it is not enough to cover the cost of equipment, officials, coaching materials, uniforms and other lacrosse expenses. Brent Petrone, head lacrosse coach and mathematics teacher at Southeastern is spearheading the campaign, hoping the crowdfunding platform will add some much needed funds to the program.
Brett Callwood of the Detroit Time blog wrote a piece on the campaign noting “It’s an interesting, unconventional move. Lacrosse certainly isn’t viewed as an inner city Detroit sport.” Brett seemed to be commenting on a TotalProSports blog that created a list titled “9 Sports for Rich People” where lacrosse ranked # 3. The article refers to the sports origins at Catholic Prep Schools in the northeast while listing some stereotypes and generalizations of lacrosse and its players. The article doesn’t mention however, the many players, organizations and coaches are on the front lines pushing the games to new minds.
